Emily graduated with a degree in Music Theater from Webster University in 2005 as did Kelli from the University of Hartford one year earlier. Both girls moved to Queens New York where they developed the world renowned duet, The Firth Sisters making high-quality performance videos of original songs and covers.

One of Emily’s jobs was an instructor with Berridge Programs; a six week theater and video program held each summer in Chateau le Mont Epinguet in France. (Nice, right?) The summer courses in 2014 brought a new instructor, Brian Dwyer, a young man from Ireland whose courses were on creating short films. Emily and Brian became friends and during the following summer’s camp, the relationship became more serious. In September 2016 Emily & Brian were married in a Justice of the Peace Ceremony (3 and a half minutes long) in downtown New York City.
Brian has a business in Ireland doing the work he is so good at and at the same time, loves New York City where Emily and Kelli lived. The decision to live in Ireland was a difficult one more so for Emily, as all of her family and friends lived in the city or somewhere in the United States. But the choice needed to be made and in January of the following year, Emily moved to Ireland to be with Brian.
I talked with Emily several times about the emotional “see-saw” she was on during the few months following the wedding and before she left for Ireland. It was clear to me that Emily was willing to embrace all of the excitement of moving to Ireland and her new life with Brian while at the same time, carrying deep sadness to be leaving her family and especially Kelli.
Very soon after Emily left for Ireland I came across a passage from the book of Ruth 1: 16: “Wherever you go I will go…” It immediately reminded me of Emily’s difficult choice that she completely embraced. I sat with the song playing very quietly like a tin whistle playing gently in the wind across the fields of Ireland and I felt comforted in knowing that wherever Emily and Brian decide to live, they will be at home.
Epilogue: As I listened to We Are Home singing in my head, the voice was Kelli’s and I was so grateful when she agreed to be the heart of this song. I love thee, MyKelli.
