Can I Share With You
I attended Alleman High School in Illinois from my Freshman – Junior years and then moved to Cashmere, WA for my Senior year. During my years at Alleman, my best friends were a couple, Gary and Paula. It’s safe to say I was a third wheel but we loved each other very much.
After moving to Cashmere and graduating in 1973 I met Marci and we married in November of that year. The following year, Christy was born and Paula and Gary were married. So Marci, Christy and I went to Illinois to attend the wedding.
The following year, Paula gave birth to a baby girl, Sarah. Upon returning home from the hospital she entered the house with Sarah; gave the baby to her mother, and said in typical Paula fashion, “Hello house I’m home”. Then she fell dead on the floor due to an aneurysm to the heart. I was notified about the death and traveled to Illinois to spend a week or two with Gary. We were inseparable; even to the point of sleeping in the same bed. He was understandably and completely distraught. Once the funeral was done and another week passed I went home.
Marci picked me up from the airport and as we got out on the main highway home I broke down in uncontrollable sobbing to the point I had to pull over. The emotional experience was so overwhelming Marci took over the wheel and I cried myself to sleep.
It was difficult to focus the next few days at work as the experience of losing a close friend and seeing another wrenching in sadness lingered like a bad dream. I was feeling feelings I had never felt before and was immature enough to think I had to hold them in; until…
I remember doing a lot of work one day on a forklift and during that time the song; Can I Share With You whispered in my ears. I was thinking of Marci and how she was so compassionate and empathetic with me on that long trip home. I was thinking about Gary and the nakedness he shared during that week after Paula died. The song became a moment of vulnerability for me; one I’d not experienced before. I knew deep inside how much I trusted Marci and our relationship and our friendship.
Can I Share With You at its core, is a love song to Marci.
