Sometimes even I find it hard to believe the stories I tell about the creation of a song. This is especially true with ‘Cept You as I rarely go for a walk on any day, especially Easter Morn. That being said, I did. It was a part of a therapy I was engaged in to deal with the side effects of the medications I was taking for Bipolar.

I can still picture the tree I stood beneath along the route I took every day and saw a butterfly being born. It was an amazing sight. The brilliance of nature, the mystery of transformation, the simple but profound dance from the tomb to flight was breathtaking. I had never witnessed something as delicate. ‘Cept…

MyBeloved Linda had endured a whirlwind of chaos over the previous two years. She was unconditionally supportive of my journey from that chaos to stability. She was gentle yet firm in her belief that the process of my transformation was like… a caterpillar becoming a butterfly.

In the spirit of keeping this reflection to just a few paragraphs I want to also acknowledge this experience and song to be at the center of a “hope to be finished book” called The Shadow Prince. However, I digress.

Once I reflected on all of the beauty, precious moments, and people of unlimited value I have in my life I wrote ‘Cept You within a few days. It is one of my favorite songs.

Thanks: My thanks to Bill Briare for providing a wonderful Mandolin part that we pieced together by humming the tune. He’s a brilliant musician and a fine person.
