Come To Me is based on Matthew 11:28-30 which, as a very young man in his first year as Youth Minister for a large parish seemed an appropriate passage of my experience.  I don’t equate my ministry with Jesus, however there were several young people from difficult backgrounds, family situations and just being a teen-ager that lead to feeling open, as Jesus was, to all who were weary, hurting, afraid.

I had a specific young person who, a very good young person, struggled with her school life, family life, and generally feeling always alone.  She met with me several times outside of the weekly youth meetings and we talked; sometimes for hours, most times about what she was feeling and sometimes, just to laugh and get away from it all.

On one occasion she came to my office very distraught, angry, frustrated and again, feeling alone.  For the short time I was with her, she cried.  That’s it…just cried.  And after having that cry, she thanked me and said, “I’m still not sure I buy all the God stuff, but if He’s like you, I could.”

I went home that afternoon and sat with that experience and, as most of my songs do; Come To Me began to sing to me.  As I write this some 35 years later, I still see her face after that cry and the smile that went with it.   I hope after listening to Come To Me, you might remember someone who was just there for you when you needed it most.
