I’m Sorry was the result of an evening of reflection on Matthew’s Gospel after all were in bed. I remember being in my kitchen in Portland in 1981 reading Matthew 25:40 ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ I remember being in prayer in the mode of contrition.
I’m Sorry was written before I went to be that night feeling discomforted by what I saw in myself after using it as an examination of conscious. I didn’t sleep well that night as I recall; as the next song on the list “If You’ll Try Again” was written the same night.
